“Healthy Home”

Radon is an odorless, tasteless, and invisible radioactive gas that is released during the radioactive decay of radium. While some radon is present everywhere in soil, rocks and water, high levels occur in regions rich in uranium, granite, shale and phosphate. The gases seep through openings/cracks in a basement floor or the slab foundation.
It measured in pico Curies per liter or pCi/L – the higher the number, the more concentrated and dangerous the gas. Corrections are recommended if your house has an average level of 4pCi/L or higher. Some areas of the country are more radon rich than others. The EPA has a map of radon zones at www.epa.gov/radon/zonemap.html and links to certified testing companies at www.epa.gov/iaq/whereyoulive.html.

“First Aid at Home”

When you get a splinter, try this before resorting to tweezers or a needle: put scotch tape over the splinter and then pull the tape off. It removes most splinters painlessly and easily. If not, then go for the tweezers.

“Cooking Safely”

According to the National Fire Protection Association, unattended cooking is a leading cause of home fires. Three out of ten home fires. Three out of ten home fires begin in the kitchen- more than any other room in the home. Safety begins with some basic guidelines: Never leave cooking unattended while frying, grilling, broiling or boiling; turn off the stove for even a short period away from the kitchen; when simmering or baking for a long period of time, check it regularly, use a timer and remain in the home; and avoid wearing loose clothing with dangling sleeves.

New Head Coach

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The University of Arkansas called a news conference Monday to name a new basketball coach and all signs pointed to Creighton's Dana Altman, who was seen at a Nebraska airport getting off a plane registered to Arkansas' athletic boosters' group.

Several news organizations reported that Altman would take the Arkansas post.

Dana Altman has a 343-208 overall record in 18 seasons as a Division I head coach and has led Creighton to seven NCAA Tournament berths in his time as head coach.

School Years Overall NCAAs
Marshall 1990 15-13 None
Kansas State 1991-94 68-54 0-1
Creighton 1995-2007 260-141 2-7

Altman returned to Omaha on Monday and called a 3 p.m. ET meeting with the team, according to ESPN.com's Andy Katz. He is expected to board the plane to return to Fayetteville for a 6 p.m. ET news conference.

Creighton officials were more concerned recently that Altman could be off to Iowa, which is a job he had coveted. But the Hawkeyes never contacted Altman. No one was convinced that Altman was going to Arkansas.

If Altman leaves Creighton, look for Scott Sutton of Oral Roberts, who was a former Bluejays coach who left there to go to Arkansas, as a possible replacement, according to Katz. Sutton is the son of legendary coach Eddie Sutton.

Arkansas officials said they did not have permission to confirm that Altman would replace Stan Heath, who was fired last week after failing to lead the Razorbacks to a single NCAA Tournament victory in five years at the school. Altman has a 2-7 record in the NCAA with the Bluejays.

Altman had been in Atlanta for the Final Four before returning to Omaha, where Creighton is located. Arkansas called a news conference for 6 p.m. ET on Monday on the floor of Bud Walton Arena, a 20,000-seat gymnasium that has seen attendance gradually decline since the Razorbacks won the 1994 national championship.

Creighton officials said they would have no comment on reports linking Altman to the Arkansas job.

Altman was seen getting off the private Arkansas plane around noon Monday and unloading luggage. Several of his assistant coaches also got off the plane with Altman. The plane, with a Razorbacks logo on the side, is registered to the Razorback Foundation.

Altman has taken Creighton to seven NCAA Tournaments in the last 13 years, including twice in the last three years. The Bluejays were the preseason No. 19 team in this year's Associated Press poll. They have had nine consecutive 20-win seasons.

Before joining Creighton, Altman coached at Marshall for one year (1989-90) and at Kansas State for four (1990-94). He has a 260-141 record with the Bluejays.

In his search for a new coach, Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles said he wanted a proven winner who can take the Razorbacks basketball program back to a prominent national level.

Last week, Arkansas sought permission to talk to Memphis' John Calipari and Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie.

Broyles said Saturday night that a trip to Atlanta, site of this year's Final Four, was productive. "It's clear that many talented and proven head coaches are intrigued by our coaching vacancy," Broyles said.

Heath was hired after taking Kent State to the round of eight in the NCAA tournament in 2002, but that was his first season as a head coach. Heath, fired after five years with the Razorbacks, took Arkansas to the last two tournaments. His teams lost to Bucknell and Southern California in first-round games.

Several other coaches have been subjects of speculation in Arkansas, including Marquette's Tom Crean and former Stanford and Golden State Warriors coach Mike Montgomery.

Wanted: Home Builders for the Moon

Two months ago, NASA announced the broad outlines of its plan for an eventual lunar outpost on the moon built on the rim of a crater near one of the moon’s poles where there would be sunlight and Earth could be seen year-round. The outpost would serve as a base for lunar research and Mars exploration, and some envision an eventual platform for luxury hotels, astronomical observatories and helium-3 mining operations. NASA and its corporate partners are already building prototypes to test some unorthodox ideas, such as inflatable habitats. The metal-hulled modules used on the international space station typically weigh 30,000 pounds, which would be too heavy for moonships that are currently being planned to have a maximum payload capacity of only 13,000 pounds. Inflatable modules could get around that limitation. David Cadogan, research director at ILC Dover, said the modules would be compressed to fit a smaller space on NASA’s smaller spaceships, dropped off on the moon, and only then filled with air, equipment and all the comforts of a lunar home. Bigelow Aerospace already has lofted one inflatable test module into orbit and is gearing up to launch another one in April. Prototypes will be tested in Antarctica and other extreme environments on Earth. Twin giants of America’s space industry, The Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin, are involved in planning efforts to start building a permanent moon base in 2010, but less conventional players include Illinois-based Caterpillar and allied companies that have been advising NASA on the dynamics of dirt and the challenges of moving heavy equipment over the lunar surface. Federal Reserve Immediate Release

The Federal Reserve Board on Friday alerted the public to instances of questionable solicitations directed at homeowners.

The Federal Reserve has received inquiries and complaints from recipients of direct mail solicitations that suggest there is a "Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) program" that entitles certain homeowners to cash grants or equity disbursements. Some of these solicitations may be read to indicate that the Federal Reserve endorses or supports the offers they contain. These solicitations appear to be a deceptive effort to encourage consumers to apply for a mortgage loan secured by the consumer's home. The Federal Reserve cautions the public about loan solicitations or other offers from lenders or mortgage brokers that offer consumers cash grants or equity disbursements as part of a "CRA Program." No such federal programs exist and these programs are not required by the CRA.

The Community Reinvestment Act is a federal law that was enacted in 1977. It encourages depository institutions to help meet the credit needs of their communities, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, in ways that are consistent with safe and sound banking operations. The CRA does not entitle individuals to any grants or loans.

The Federal Reserve is also advising consumers that it does not endorse or sponsor mortgage loan programs. Consumers should be very suspicious of conducting business with lenders or mortgage brokers that make deceptive claims. Individuals who are considering taking out a loan using their house as security are urged to shop around. Comparing loan programs offered by a variety of different lenders can help consumers to get a better deal.

Taxes, Savings and W-4s

Income tax refunds are used in a variety of ways including paying down credit card debt, helping to pay for college tuition or just to purchase something. But, they do not help savings. Refunds result when taxpayers have more money withheld from their paychecks than they actually need to pay their federal income taxes. It amounts to lending their money to the government interest- free. In today’s complex tax laws, so many factors change how much tax is owed the taxpayers often don’t know they have over-withheld until it is too late. It is increasingly difficult to get the W-4 right. In order to come close to the “correct” amount of withholding, employees need to fill out new W-4s almost every year. Financial planners advise people who want to save money to reduce withholding and set aside the extra money in a separate account. Here’s how to save with out getting a big income tax refund:
  • Fill out a new W-4 form for your employer every year
  • Use the IRS W-4 calculator to decide how many allowances to claim. Go to www.irs.gov and click on “IRS Withholding Calculator”.
  • Direct your reduced withholding into a separate account and save it or pay down credit card debt.

Education as Investment

According to the College Board, four years worth of tuition, fees, books, and supplies at a public university costs $80,000. Room, board, transportation and other costs raises the total costs to about $50,000 for public universities and $110,000 for private. However, when viewed as an investment for the future, the lifetime gain can be substantial. Although it varies based on the field of study, the gain can be several times the above costs over a lifetime.
